Novel antimicrobial hydrogels for wound healing developed

Our MIX-UP partner Prof. Auxiliadora Prieto is involved in a new publication in the International Journal of Biological Macromolecules.

An intersting article titled "Anti-staphylococcal hydrogels based on bacterial cellulose and the antimicrobial biopolyester poly(3-hydroxy-acetylthioalkanoate-co-3-hydroxyalkanoate)" was published in the International Journal of Biological Macromolecules. The team used microorganisms that naturally produce a huge variety of biopolymers such as polysaccharides, polyesters, and polyamides. These biopolymers present a renewable character, intrinsic biocompatibility, biodegradability and specific features, which make them good candidates for the development of biomaterials. In thiis new publication, bacterial cellulose (BC) and poly(3-hydroxy-acetylthioalkanoate-co-3-hydroxyalkanoate) biopolymer (PHACOS) were specifically chosen for the development of gels with antimicrobial properties for wound healing.
