ISBP 2022 Conference

Prof. Lars Blank gives a lecture at the ISBP 2022 Conference.

The 18th edition of the ISBP 2022 Conference took place in Sion, Switzerland and was organized by the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland (HES-SO) and the University of Stuttgart. Prof. Lars Blank would have liked to attend in person, but unfortunately was not able to travel at short notice. Luckily he was able to participate online: „Contributing our vision for a sustainable plastic economy by realizing 'Plastic waste to bioplastic' was a pleasure. Thanks to the organizers of the ISBP 2022, Manfred Zinn and Dieter Jendrossek to make it possible to join via Webex.”

The International Symposium on Biopolymers (ISBP) is a successful series of symposia that is taking place usually every two years since the very first meeting in Toronto 1988. ISBP2022 focused on (bio)polymers like polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), cellulose, pullulan, cyanophycin, polylactic acid (PLA), polyisoprenes (rubbers), but is also opened for bio-based polymers like PEF and included inorganic biopolymers such as polyphosphate (polyP).

The bioplastic market is about 2.5 million tons to date, not even 7% of all plastic produced per year. However, as ISBP 2022 highlighted, the future is bright, with at least 15 million tons of new production capacity announced. PBAT, PBS, PLA, but also PHA from bacteria will contribute. MIX-UP is proud to have been the sponsor of the ISBP 2022 conference. This time, we think of the end-of life of the plastic material before we put tons and tons into the environment.
