MIX-UP - working on a solution for the plastic crisis

Lars Blank comments on the challange constituted by unfavorable plastic combinations in our food packeging.

"Food packaging consists of three or four, sometimes up to twelve layers of different plastics. That's the real challenge, but also the opportunity." In the interview with Lombard Odier given on September 2nd, Lars Blank highlights the efforts of the MIX-UP project while also placing the project's objectives in context with other projects and start-ups, like Carbios. "While Carbios breaks down and cleans the plastic and makes new PET, we feed it to microbes," Blank explains. The microbes eat the plastic monomers, "and with the solid that's left at the end, we see if we can use chemical processes or bioprocessing to get other high-value materials."
