The impact of microplastics on human health

The increase of microplastics in our environment raises one important question: How does it affect human health?

The term microplastics refers to all plastic particles smaller than 5 mm. Microplastics form through the breaking and wearing down of bigger plastic objects. Those micro particles find their way back into our life: recent studies suggest that humans are exposed to microplastic all the time. They can be present in the air, in our food and often they are added to cosmetics on purpose. The related health issues, which might include DNA damage, are yet to be fully uncovered. This matter is discussed in detail in the newly published paper "Microplastics and human health" by A. Dick Vethaak and Juliette Legler in Science Volume 371, Issue 6530. Enjoy reading!
