BioTeam is composed of around 20 researchers (senior researchers, post-docs, PhD students and masters) and develops biobased and/or biodegradable polymers for environmental and biomedical applications. BioTeam has built a full value chain from biomass towards final objects. At the different levels of this chain, it integrates white
biotech to elaborate building blocks or bio-macromolecules, polymer chemistry, formulation and plastic processing, with different characteristics (chemical, bio-chemical, mechanical, and physico-chemical).
CNRS and UNISTRA are involved in WP6 “Product diversification and separation”. They will elaborate and characterise second generation polymers from building blocks obtained by
enzymatic degradation. Moreover, they will contribute to the scientific dissemination of the MIX-UP results in WP8 “Dissemination and exploitation”.
Prof. Luc Avérousis a Group (BioTeam) Leader at ICPEES (Joint Unit CNRS/University of Strasbourg: UMR CNRS 7515) and former Lab Director. In 2003, he became a Full Professor at the University of Strasbourg, where he teaches bio-polymer science, biomaterials, composites, plastic processing and polymers characterisation. During the last two decades, his main research projects have dealt with bio-based and/or bio-degradable polymers for environmental and biomedical applications. As a leading international expert in these fields, he has developed strong collaborations with international labs (Australia, Brazil, Canada, and Spain) and major companies. He is regularly invited to co-organise conferences, to chair symposia, and to give plenary or keynote lectures overseas. For instance, in 2011, he was the main organiser of two major international conferences in Strasbourg: BIOPOL and WoodChem 2011. He has co-edited three books (Wiley, Elsevier & Springer) and is a member of ten Editorial Boards and Guest Editor of different scientific journal issues. He has published hundreds of scientific communications (articles, chapters, patents and proceeding papers) with around 5,000 citations.
Dr Eric Polletis an Associate Professor at ECPM-University of Strasbourg (France) and a member of the BioTeam-ICPEES (Joint Unit CNRS/University of Strasbourg: UMR CNRS 7515) since 2004. During the last ten years, his major research projects have dealt with different biodegradable polymers. He has been particularly involved in the synthesis and the physico-chemical properties of various bio-polymers (e.g., starch, chitosan, PLA, PHA, PCL) and biopolymers/nanoclays systems. In this field, he has managed different projects and contributed to several international papers and books chapters. Eric is a peer-reviewer for many scientific journals and works as a lecturer for polymer science and chemistry.
Agathe Mouren studied at the Graduate School of Engineering in Paper, Print Media and Biomaterials (Fibers and Biomaterials Engineering specialty) where she received her engineer title in July 2020 as top of the class. She did her master thesis in the Nestlé Research Center in Lausanne, Switzerland, where she worked on new biobased and biodegradable food packaging on which a patent has been written. She also studied at Polytechnique Montréal for 6 months as an exchange student.
She started her PhD project with Luc Avérous at the beginning of October 2020. She will work on the development of new polymers from molecules resulting from the bioproduction and bio-recycling of end-of-life plastics in a sustainable development approach.
Dr Géraldine LAYRAC has studied inorganic chemistry at Montpellier University. Her thesis focused on the colloidal stability of layered double hydroxide (LDH) suspensions using asymmetric poly(acrylic acid)-b-poly(acrylamide) (PAA-b-PAM) double hydrophilic block copolymers (DHBCs). She has a solid experience of 10 year-olds in the development of nanostructured hybrid materials acquired in the Charles Gerhardt Institute laboratory in Montpellier. Since 2018 August, she has integrated the Polymer Research department of ICPEES laboratory at Strasbourg and is working on biobased and/or biodegradable polymers, for environmental and biomedical applications.

Postdoc
William Facchinatto has a PhD in Physical Chemistry at São Carlos Institute of Chemistry, University of São Paulo, Brazil. As a chemist and materials scientist, he has experience in the preparation of synthetic and biopolymers, as well as the production of nanocomposites and biomaterials by different methods used in industry and academia. William has already worked with synthetic routes of polymerizations, drug delivery systems, photodynamic therapy and novel NMR methods for biopolymer characterization during his PhD at EMBRAPA Instrumentation, Brazil, a period abroad at the INEB-i3S, Portugal and a postdoc at UFMS, Brazil He also worked at the Physical-Chemistry Lab at R&I Center of RHODIA Solvay, Brazil; as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at UNIFEB, Brazil. He is currently hired as a Postdoc Research Assistant for the MIX-UP Project in the BioTeam Group ICPEES-ECPM, University of Strasbourg, UNISTRA, France.
