The Institute of Biochemistry is located in a modern building (opened 2006) with excellent facilities in terms of equipment, laboratories and for teaching. In total, eight professors educate and research in biochemistry, bioinorganic chemistry, bioorganic chemistry,

analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, structural biology, and biotechnology for students from Biochemistry, Biology, Pharmacy, Medicine and Environmental Sciences and Geology.

    Main tasks within MIX-UP

The UG team will coordinate WP2 and will also be involved in WP1, 7, and 8 in the MIX-UP project. The UG team aims to isolate and engineer novel enzymes from nature and/or

based on known biocatalysts towards improved catalytic activities against mixed petrochemical plastics under lab condition as well as in a pilot-scale bioreactor.

Prof. Dr Uwe T. Bornscheuer is the head of the Department for Biotechnology and Enzyme Catalysis at the Institute of Biochemistry at UG since 1999. He studied chemistry and got his PhD in 1993 from Hannover University. After a postdoc in Japan, he completed his Habilitation at Stuttgart University. Since 1999 he is a professor at UG. He has a renowned track record in the discovery, engineering, and application of enzymes in organic synthesis, lipid modification, enzymatic degradation of plastics or algal polysaccharides.

Dr Ren Weireceived his diploma degree in biology in 2007 from Heidelberg University and his PhD in 2012 from Leipzig University. He has more than 12 years hands-on expertise in the identification, characterisation, genetic engineering, and recombinant production of bacterial hydrolases as well as their application in the degradation of various petrochemical plastics. He is an expert in biochemistry and molecular biology combined with a profound knowledge in the field of bioinformatics and biomathematics. Dr Wei assists Prof. Bornscheuer to conduct the executive administration and leads the scientific activities for MIX-UP project.
