TNO’s unit Circular Economy and Environment has carried out various studies in the fields of Life Cycle Assessment, Life Cycle Costing, Ecoefficiency, Social Life Cycle Assessment, Sustainability Assessment, Actor Analysis, Ecodesign, Product comparisons and End-of-Life management. The type of projects is ranging from methodological developments (e.g. external costing, shadow prices), chain analysis, data bases to chain related dynamic modelling (e.g. for innovative processes). TNO’s work in the field of circular plastics consists of impact assessment and value chain management, design for circularity, mechanical and (thermo)chemical recycling and microplastics.

Dr Esther Zondervan-van den Beuken (female, coordinator) has been active in the research of circular economy, environmental and health risks for about 8 years. She obtained her Ph.D. degree in chemistry at the Radboud University of Nijmegen (1992). Subsequently, she performed a Ph.D. research at the University of Groningen on the subject of homogenous catalysis in the group of Prof. B.L. Feringa (Nobel Prize Chemistry 2016) and graduated in 1997. She was employed by Fuji Photo Film in the position of an engineer for three years. Since 2000 she is working at TNO as a Sr Project Manager/Consultant. Her research activities are currently mainly in the field of circular plastics (impact assessment, value chain management, design, durability and recycling). She was involved in several national collaboration programmes and in many European projects (FP7 and H2020). At this moment she coordinates the H2020 project PLAST2bCLEANED (plast2bcleaned.eu). She is a member of Dutch and European Plastic Pact, Dutch working group on standardisation and is chair of the working group on chemical recycling of the ECP4. She is (co-)author of about 20 scientific papers and 1 international patent.
