Plastic contamination is a major environmental challenge, which can be tackled from a biotechnological perspective. Bioremediation, which implies using microorganisms or microbial consortia to degrade plastic, is a promising yet not fully optimized possibility. This talk will describe several examples of bioprospecting efforts carried out on natural and semi-artificial environments with the aim of selecting in the laboratory plastic-degrading microorganisms that may contribute to biodegrade plastic contaminants in the environment.
