Great little things

Microbes are found everywhere in and on our body but also in our environment. Although they are tiny, the benefits of microbial abundance in our life are enourmous.

An interesting article was published in the scientific journal for kids "Das Magazin für neugierige Forscher" by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. It gives a short introduction into the wolrd of microbes and their characteristics like the ability to survive in extreme environments. For thousands of years people have been using microbes to produce food like cheese or bread and with modern technologies we can do much more. One example of a new way of using microbes is explored at RWTH Aachen University in the laboratory of Prof. Lars Blank and his team, one of our MIX-UP partners. The scientiests modify microbes to enhance their ability to digest plastics with the goal to contribute to a solution in fighting the increasing plastic pollution. Interested?
