MIX-UP came to an end after 54 months of intense and successful collaboration between Europe and China. The project has made significant strides in tackling plastic waste, aiming to transform unsorted, mixed plastics into valuable bioplastics. By utilizing enzyme mixtures and microbial communities, the project successfully broke down plastic polymers into reusable monomers, demonstrating a novel recycling method and identifying new enzymes that efficiently degrade plastics, paving the way for more sustainable recycling solutions. The results are expected to lead to new economic opportunities and help reduce the environmental impact of plastic waste. Read more about the project’s breakthroughs here.
